Elijah Friedeman, the Millennial Perspective

Nearly all Americans say sending a text message while driving should be illegal, and about half say texting while behind the wheel should be punished at least as harshly as drunken driving, according to a recent New York Times/CBS News poll.

Ninety-seven percent support the prohibition of texting while driving, an unusual level of agreement for any topic. Eighty percent also support a ban on talking on a hand-held cellphone while driving.

Fifty percent said the punishment for texting while driving should be just as severe as for drunken driving.

Now maybe it's because I'm sixteen, though I don't think that's the reason, but I absolutely disagree with the views of the large majority of people who responded to this poll poll, which would put me in the extreme minority of people in this nation. For clarifications sake, I have never texted while driving, so I'm not simply making my case because I'm already an offender. No, I think this poll shows a lack of contempt for personal responsibility and personal freedom.

One thing that strikes me about this poll is that polls have shown that more than two-thirds of people talk on cell phones whil driving, yet 80% in this poll have said it should be illegal. Hypocrisy much?

If the government is allowed to tell me not to text, because it could impair my ability to drive responsibly, where does it end? I'm sure there have been studies that have shown the chances of an accident go up while people are eating and driving at the same time. Should eating be banned while driving? What about listening to the radio? That certainly can't be conducive to safe driving. Talking with passengers in the car? That can certainly be distracting. If the government is allowed to tell me or you that we can't text while driving, where does its power over our lives end?

The government stepping in to dictate every facet of our lives takes away personal responsibility. People can and should utilize their God-given common sense to realize that texting while driving is detrimental to their performance on the road. If the government has to tell us to not text, why shouldn't they be able to tell us what to buy?

Personal responsibility and smaller government are both fundamental platforms that conservatives espouse. Since conservatives believe in these two stances, I have a hard time figuring out why 97% of Americans want more government involvement and less personal responsibility.

I don't oppose a ban on cellphone use while driving because I think texting and driving is a good idea. I oppose a ban because it goes against conservative principles that I hold.

I'm sure many of you will disagree with me (97% if this poll is to be believed). So you can contact me here: themillennialperspective@gmail.com

97% of the people are correct. I drive for a living and texting while driving is dangerous. Driving is not a right, it is a privlege. You have a responsibility to operate a motor vehicle in the safest manner possible. Your argument would suppose that we should remove stop signs, yellow lines, speed limits, etc. Conservative principles are more than small government and personal responsibility. Conservative principles espouse freedom with discipline. You are not free to do whatever you want and not be responsible to the rest of society. Assuring safety while operating a motor vehicle does not lead to restricting your freedoms in other areas of your life. You are wrong in this case, and you need to listen to those that are older, wiser and more experienced than you.

Good article. I agree. Lots of truth here. We need to fight back, or we're going to lose it all.

The thing I want to know is how people expect this to be enforced. When texting the phone is below the window, so it just looks like your looking down. So 99% of the time no one could even tell you are texting. But if it does become a law, I can always just go with the excuse "I wasn't texting officer, I was writing an email"

Thank God there are still young people who have not lost the ability to think independently.

The government could help by making laws that would give severe penalties for irresponsible behavior, not making laws that infringe on personal freedoms.

I agree that the government shouldn't be so involved in our lives that there is no need for personal responsibility. We were given brains - let's use them. In CA they passed a law against using cell phones while driving, but I still see lots of people hold cell phones and talk while driving. More personal responsibility is the answer, not more government.

Texting and driving do not mix. If the government has to be your brain, so be it. Better than having it spilled on the highway by a texting driver.

The problem is that many people don't have the common sense it requires to realize that texting while driving is a bad idea. I want to be protected against such people; just as I'm glad there is a law against drunk driving, I would not mind a law against texting (or any cell phone use for that matter) while driving. Laws are not for those of us who would never disobey them in the first place; they are to protect us from those who would disobey them!

Sometimes when people lose their personal sense of responsibility (which seems to be more and more these days) we need help in order to protect ourselves and our loved ones. I am not for more government generally, but when it comes to knowing there are more and more people out there texting while driving just because they can and killing innocent people because of this, accountability needs to happen and I'm not willing to make it take having an avoidable tradgedy happen to my family before the individual accepts his/her personal responsibility. No thanks!

I agree. Toooooo much government

I agree whole heartedly. Drinking alcohol is different; you are not the same. You are still the same person whether texting or not. Victoria in Castle Rock, CO

I agree that the government is stepping in too far.
