It turns out that the health care plan offered by the Republican National Committee to its own employees covers elective abortion.
Serious problem of consistency here, since the GOP platform unambiguously calls abortion "a fundamental assault on innocent human life."
CIGNA, the insurance company that provides the plan, said they offered the RNC the opportunity to opt out of abortion coverage, but the RNC didn't exercise the option.
An RNC spokesman said that the policy pre-dates Michael Steele's tenure, and that "we are taking steps to address the issue." Let's hope so.
The minimum we should expect from the party's leadership is some semblance of adherence to its own principles, and it looks like the place to begin is at the top.
