When Ideology Becomes Science

“[February 15, 2010] THERE has been no global warming for 15 years, a key scientist admitted yesterday in a major U-turn.”

“[This]...latest bombshell is an admission from Phil Jones, the East Anglia University scientist at the center of the "Climategate" scandal: He says his raw data (a vital resource for those claiming climate change) is in such disarray that it probably can't be replicated or verified.

He also admits that the medieval warm period may have been as warm as today – devasting [sic] the claim that today's temperatures are the clear result of modern industry. More, he agrees that there's been no statistically significant warming for the last 15 years.”

For several years now, the civilized world has been bombarded with the unproven, alarmist notion of doomsday AGW (Anthropogenic Global Warming).

There is certainly a danger lurking here, but it's not the danger of AGW, it's the danger of falsehoods being presented as science in order to promote an ideology.  In this case, what ideology would that be?

Totalitarian environmentalism, the global Green movement: Green Socialism (GS).

GS is an effort by socialists (i.e., Marxists, progressives, leftists, modern liberals, etc.) to control what they believe to be unrestrained industrialism and capitalism, and to redistribute wealth that they believe should be shared with those who have not earned it.

GS is falsehood presented as science, amalgamated with the Marxist economic goal of  redistribution of wealth.

The current model for this fleece-meistering is the AlGore-game: Doomsday AGW plus the political-scam of intimidating governments to force industries to buy carbon-tax credits.  The AlGore-game will allow businesses to omit carbon dioxide, after buying carbon-tax credits from third-world countries (presumably poor) who can sell carbon-tax credits because they don't have a so-called large carbon footprint.  How convenient.

Last and certainly not least in this utterly, unbelievable snake-oil scheme, is the convenient fact that it will put huge profits into the pockets of AGW humbugs such as Al Gore, whose companies will function as brokers for the carbon-tax credits.  You almost have to admire the brazenness of a fraud of such magnitude that it makes Bernie Madoff look like a rank amateur.

It is difficult to imagine that modern, intelligent, and informed people could be taken in with such a con-job.  But something similar has happened before.  We have already had at least one very deadly, global environmental hoax.  Return with me briefly to 1962.

The environmental hoax that began in 1962, was initiated by the publication of Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring.  As with most evil (yes evil), the modern environmental movement began with a perversion.  In this case the perversion was the coupling of conservationism (the worthy effort to conserve our earth) with falsification and over-hyping of a potential danger (from DDT and other pesticides).

Silent Spring, led to the first earth day in 1969, followed by the creation of that ever-growing governmental monster, in 1969, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  Only recently, under Barack Obama's misguided direction, the EPA has declared that carbon dioxide is a dangerous gas.  You know, the gas we humans exhale and the gas that plants convert into vegetation products?  This life-related gas is now being labeled harmful by the EPA.

Rachel Carson's alarmist book, Silent Spring, mounted an untruthful and nonfactual attack against pesticides, especially DDT.  As a result of her attack, and the attacks of others who accepted her unsubstantiated statements, the use of DDT has been virtually eliminated in Africa.   And what has been the results of that elimination of the use of DDT?

The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) reports that

“Each year 350-500 million cases of malaria occur worldwide, and over one million people die, most of them young children in sub-Saharan Africa.”

“Malaria is carried by the Anopheles mosquito which requires a blood meal to feed her developing eggs.”

DDT is one of the most effective pesticides known to combat the Anopheles mosquito, hence to eliminate malaria.  Why isn't it being used?

“Approximately 3,000 lives are lost to malaria every day. Most of these deaths could be prevented.

The most cost-effective way to reduce the incidence of malaria is through indoor residual spraying (IRS) with small amounts of the insecticide DDT; this has been shown to kill and repel malarial mosquitoes, reducing malaria rates by 50 to 80 per cent. There is now widespread agreement by scientists, public health authorities, and international health agencies that IRS programmes using DDT should be the primary tool for malaria prevention.

Already IRS using DDT is saving hundreds of thousands of lives. But more can – and should – be done. Governments across Africa recognise this and want to use DDT in IRS. However, the European Union is seeking to discourage the practice – threatening the lives and livelihoods of millions of people across the continent.

The EU has created confusion in Uganda by issuing statements claiming that DDT harms human health. Such claims are not supported by scientific evidence accumulated over decades. Richard Tren of South African health charity Africa Fighting Malaria points out, “When DDT is used in IRS, it saves lives and prevents disease, improving human wellbeing. It poses no threat to human beings at the levels at which it is used in IRS.”

“If the European bureaucrats opposed to the use of DDT have their way, they will effectively condemn tens of thousands of Ugandan children to death,” said Tren.”

And what triggered this eco-wacho-death-practice?  Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring.  It was a book that absolutely poisoned public opinion against DDT and other pesticides.  Was the irrationality of the book known at the time?  Yes.  Dr. J. Gordan Edwards, a well known entomologist, and himself an environmentalist, documented many of the falsehoods contained in Silent Spring shortly after it was released.  Here's what Dr. Edwards had to say:

“In 1962, when Rachel Carson published her book Silent Spring, I was delighted. I belonged to several environmental-type organizations, had no feelings of respect for industry or big business, had one of my own books published by the Sierra Club, and I had written articles for The Indiana Waltonian, Audubon Magazine, and other environmental magazines.

At the time, I had been engaged in field work at the University of Wyoming research station in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for three summers and I worked as biological coordinator for the National Park Service in Glacier National Park. I eagerly read the condensed version of Silent Spring in the New Yorker magazine and bought a copy of the book as soon as I could find it in the stores. As I read the first several chapters I noticed many statements that I realized were false; however, one can overlook such things when they are produced by one’s cohorts, and I did just that.

As I neared the middle of the book, the feeling grew in my mind that Rachel Carson was really playing loose with the facts and was also deliberately wording many sentences in such a way as to make them imply certain things without actually saying them. She was carefully omitting everything that failed to support her thesis that pesticides were bad, that industry was bad, and that any scientists who did not support her views were bad.”

----
Page 17. Carson says arsenic is a carcinogen (identified from chimney soot) and mentions a great many horrible ways in which it is violently poisonous to vertebrates. She then says (page 18): “Modern insecticides are still more deadly,” and she makes a special mention of DDT as an example.

This implication that DDT is horribly deadly is completely false. Human volunteers have ingested as much as 35 milligrams of it a day for nearly two years and suffered no adverse affects. Millions of people have lived with DDT intimately during the mosquito spray programs and nobody even got sick as a result. The National Academy of Sciences concluded in 1965 that “in a little more than two decades, DDT has prevented 500 million [human] deaths that would otherwise have been inevitable.” The World Health Organization stated that DDT had “killed more insects and saved more people than any other substance.” A leading British scientist pointed out that “If the pressure groups had succeeded, if there had been a world ban on DDT, then Rachel Carson and Silent Spring would now be killing more people in a single year than Hitler killed in his whole holocaust.”

When you read carefully the quotes above you realize that Dr. Edwards was exposing the very same type of falsehoods that have been promulgated by Al Gore and the other apostles of doomsday AGW.

What are those types of falsehoods?

False statements.
Playing loose with the facts (deceptive imprecision).
Implying without actually stating.
Omitting information that does not support the preferred thesis.
Demonizing critics.

If you reflect briefly you will also realize that these types of falsehoods are always associated with any attempted inculcation, of a person or group of people, with an ideology.

If all of these types of falsehoods sound very familiar it's because you have been hearing them for at least the past five years from Al Gore, and for the past three years from Barack Obama, and for the past 50-plus years from the left-leaning media.

There is a growing chance that the illogical and deadly non-use of DDT in much of Africa may be reversed.  But it is too late to save the millions of people (mostly children) that have already died from malaria because of an acceptance of falsehood for science.

Doomsday AGW has recently been shown (beginning with so-called ClimateGate) to be riddled with lies, mistakes, missing and bogus data, cover-ups, and vested-interests.  The cumulative nature of all this is of such magnitude that no open-minded, thoughtful person would consider the AlGore-game, doomsday AGW, to be anything other than what it obviously is, an out-an-out fraud.

It is important that currently this fraud is being resisted, rejected, and stopped in many places.  But it is perhaps more important that the global public recognize the dangerous reality which allowed this fraud to be promulgated.

It is a frightening realization that needs to be underscored:

Science as once conceived--truth-loving, objective, forthright, open-minded, non-ideological-- can no longer be safely thought-of in those terms.  We must now be vigilant to the fact that there will increasingly be efforts to couple falsehood with ideology and present it as science.  We can expect much more of this from the modern evil that calls itself environmentalism, or better labeled, Green Socialism.
