Herman Cain is under fire from some Latino Republican groups, specifically Somos Republicans, for some comments he made over the weekend of developing an electrified fence along our southern border with Mexico.
Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Saturday that part of his immigration policy would be to build an electrified fence on the country’s border with Mexico that could kill people trying to enter the country illegally.
Cain has stated that he is joking, but apparently the damage has been done. Especially Lauro Antonia Garza, state director of Somos Republicans, who has threatened to leave the GOP because of this.
“Today, we find the Republican Party has strayed from its roots and its founding principals so far that they can no longer be seen. We saw this yesterday, in the glare of broad daylight, when a leading presidential candidate, Herman Cain, not once, but twice, advocated for the murder of innocent people and that was met with cheers!”
“Ronald Reagan left the Democrat Party saying they had left him. Perhaps, I shall do the same because the Republican Party has become radical and unreasonable. President Reagan must be tumbling in his grave!”
Here's the thing, what roots is he talking about? Border security has alway been at the forefront of the Republican Party. I guess when Republicans talk about granting amnesty they are straying fro their roots, but not this. Especially when new data has come out about just who we are deporting.
Fiscal year 2011 saw 396,906 illegal immigrants were deported. Of those deported 55% were criminals!
The Bottom Line is this: We have to focus on sealing up that border. While an electric fence that could kill people may not be the appropriate action, trying to bash the Republicans for talking about it doesn't help either. It seems to me that no matter what party affiliation they say they have, groups like Somos Republicans seem to only care about immigration.
