Retailer's 'War on Christmas' already starting - and we're naming names...

UPDATE! October 28, 2011
PetSmart has issued the following statement. No further action is needed.  Thank you for caring enough to get involved.
"We know it's early, but we have received several messages expressing concern that our upcoming holiday promotions will take 'Christmas' out of the Christmas season. Some companies refrain from any mention of Christmas in their holiday promotions, but PetSmart is not one of them. We have many customers who celebrate Christmas, and just as we have done in past years, we will continue our tradition of holding an annual Countdown to Christmas sale. Several of our upcoming store and on-line promotions will also continue to expressly celebrate Christmas and, since we have many customers who celebrate Chanukah, Kwanzaa, and other faith-based and cultural holidays and events this time of year, several of our promotions will also expressly celebrate these events as well."

Original Alert:

Some retailers have already begun their "holiday" advertising. The catch is, they are exclusively promoting "Christmas" items. One such company is PetSmart.

At PetSmart, Christmas doesn't exist. It is not to be found anywhere on their website. AFA checked out the local PetSmart store and there was no Christmas there, either.

A search on PetSmart's website found 641 references to "holiday." But, alas, this is very misleading. When you search for "Christmas" you are directed to a page containing the same gifts you get when you search for holiday. Of all the items that pop up when you search for "Christmas," not a single one mentions it by name.

Most national retailers are now using "Christmas," but there are some that are still clinging to a losing strategy of political correctness. With that in mind, AFA will soon launch our annual AFA "Naughty or Nice" listing of national retailers.

In addition, we'll choose one company and ask you to boycott them during the Christmas shopping season.
